Tying With Greg
Greg Glitzer crafting one of his eye-catching stonefly nymphs - January, 2007"There is, I think, not much point in being a fly fisherman unless one is prepared to be generous and fairly relaxed about it" - Roderick Haig-Brown
In light of the present day state of fly fishing, with it's attendant purveyors of secret flies, covert streams and strident proclamations, I think the above quote deserves the stamp of immortality. It also perfectly describes the prevailing manner in which Greg approaches our once gentle sport. There always seem to be a few innovative fly tiers out there who, with the exception of their cult followings, always seem to be working just under the local radar turning out flies that often stand apart and above their more famous brethren. Here in Pennsylvania, Greg has grabbed the baton from the likes of Chauncey Lively, Clayton Peters, Vince Marinaro, Russ Mowry, et. al. and is cranking out some of the most striking patterns to ever drift down a deep, slick limestone run. Rarely seen on the water without a bamboo fly rod in his hand, Greg divides his fishing & aquatic research time between the freestone streams of the Catskills & Poconos, the northern Rockies and the limestone streams of central Pennsylvania.
The fly images that follow are just a small example of Greg's astonishing work. Greg credits Oliver Edwards, Steve Thornton, Macallan Single Malt Scotch and Spatola's pizza as heavily influencing his tying style. Enjoy!
